Thomas Burns, MD

Thomas Burns is a native of Austin and a graduate of Anderson High School. He attended the University of Texas at Austin and received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. Dr. Burns completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center before being selected for the prestigious Steadman-Hawkins Sports Medicine Fellowship in Vail, Colorado.

Dr. Burns has been practicing orthopedics and sports medicine in Austin since 1991. He is a team physician for the United States Ski Team and travels the world taking care of world class athletes. He continues to treat athletes at the professional, Olympic, collegiate, high school and recreational levels. He currently cares for the U.S. Ski Team, as well as St. Edwards University and numerous high school and recreational athletes in the Austin and central Texas area.

Dr. Burns has over two decades of experience treating athletes of all levels in multiple sports. As a previous competitive athlete, the added experience of treating world class athletes has given Dr. Burns insight that has helped him return athletes to competition quickly with as little loss of conditioning as possible.

Dr. Burns' orthopedic interests include minimally invasive arthroscopic and joint replacement techniques as well as accelerated, sport-specific rehabilitation techniques. Outside interests include family, tennis, golf, hunting and travel.
